Are you ready for winter?

How to prepare your vehicle for winter driving

In many parts of the country, it seemed as though we had skipped over the last bit of fall and went straight to winter. As a result, we thought it might be a good idea to go through some tips on how to prepare your vehicle for winter driving. It will be here before you know it!

What should I keep in my car?

During the winter months, you should really think about having an emergency snow kit in your vehicle. If you were to become stranded on the side of the road, it would be a great idea to have the following items stored in your back seat or trunk:

  • Granola bars
  • Water
  • Warm clothes
  • Extra mittens, gloves, scarves, hats, etc.
  • Radio
  • Charged cell phone
  • Sand
  • Extra ice scraper

How do I prepare my engine for the winter months?

The first thing you should do is to check your antifreeze levels. This wonderful liquid will help keep your engine from freezing and help ensure that you get to and from your various destinations safely. You should also check your engine coolant levels. Many auto supply stores sell a kit that allows you to check these levels. Otherwise, take your vehicle to your trusted mechanic and ask them to give everything a once over.

How do your tires look?

The next items you should check are your tires. Make sure that your tires have the correct amount of air in them and that the tread is good and thick. If it has been a while since you had your tires replaced, now would be a great time to do so to make sure that you stay safe and on the roads this winter season.

Check your windshield washer fluid

The washer fluid that you use in the warm months can wreak havoc on your windshield in the winter. This is because as soon as you spray the fluid onto your windshield, it will freeze. Avoid this danger by switching to winter washer fluid now!
